about

Growing up in the Northeast I was always fascinated by Southern culture and lifestyle. This song is inspired by the great writings of Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, and Truman Capote, as well as the great actor John Hawkes in the film Winter’s Bone.

Blue gingham dress, second-hand shoes
Dirt on her fingers like some second-hand news
She’s washing the dishes, she’s singing a song
Gonna sit on this porch until she comes along

Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl

She come down from the holler, works for my family
She got sisters and brothers living in poverty
Her daddy had a still, found his bones up near the creek
Poor thing so hungry she could hardly speak

Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl

Momma taught her how to cook, how to use a needle and thread
She took care of us kids, she’d bake us gingerbread
Grew up tall and pretty, with a smile from heaven above
I swore to the angels she’d be my only love.

Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl

But Daddy took a fancy as that girl came of age
His hunger knew no bounds, like a possum in a cage
They stole off together, heard that old truck drive away
Been 30 years now, I hear the sound to this day

The world is a wild place, full of twists and turns
Like a fire in forest, it knows not how it burns
I still dream of that girl, my true love she'll ever be
And late at night I wonder, if she ever thinks of me

Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
Kitchen girl, kitchen girl
