about

“Last of the Twickham Blackbirds” is a song I wrote about a secret society of British soldiers in WWII whose mission was to save the world from behind enemy lines and they were never allowed to talk about it.

There’s a method in the madness, all the spirits of the night
Howling at the questions, staring into the light
I knew a man like that once, he would tell us of his past
His stories would fill us up just like sails on a mast

He said, I’m the last of Twickham blackbirds. My story must be told
I’m the last of Twickham blackbirds. Such a sight to behold

He said, I’ve run off to see the world, been in love with a girl before
I won and lost a few fortunes and I been beaten down to the floor
I’ve seen the houses of the holy, I’ve heard the song of the whippoorwill
I don’t answer to nobody, I walk of my own free will

He said, I’m the last of Twickham blackbirds. My story must be told
I’m the last of the Twickham blackbirds. Such a sight to behold
Like myths upon the water, red and black against the grey
I’m the last of Twickham Blackbirds, and we will fly again one day, we will fly again one day

He wore a wool coat and a bowtie, and he rubbed his chin in time
Telling stories of his life, his adventures, his crimes
As the sun faded from the window he bummed yet another beer
When he finished he slammed the glass down, began to sing loud, so clear

He said, I’m the last of Twickham blackbirds. My story must be told
I’m the last of the Twickham blackbirds. Such a sight to behold
Like myths upon the water, red and black against the grey
I’m the last of the Twickham blackbirds and we will fly again one day
We will fly again one day. We shall never fade away.
